The Teen Creed

I was watching a show the other day and a celebrity brought up this thing called the "Teen Creed".
She said that her mother made her memorize it as a teen and recite it before she would go out with her friends. I had never heard this before, but I thought it was pretty good and wanted to share

Teen Creed

Don't let your parents down,
They brought you up.

Be humble enough to obey,
You may give orders someday.

Choose companions with care,
You become what they are.

Guard your thoughts,
What you think, you are.

Choose only a date
Who would make a good mate.

Be master of your habits,
Or they will master you.

Don't be a show off when you drive,
Drive with safety and arrive.

Don't let the crowd pressure you,
Stand for something-
Or you'll fall for anything.

Have any of you ever heard of this before? Was there something like this that your parents made you memorize?

  1. I've seen this set of slogans (give or take a few) as a forward, but wouldn't have thought of having kids memorize it. It does make me think of all the times my mom talked to me about difficult situations I might encounter, listened as I decided ahead of time how I felt about them, and then helped me figure out what to do or say if I faced them. Rolled my eyes at the time, but when I look back at those years, I see what a difference those "sessions" made!

  2. I've never heard that before. And my parents never made me memorize anything. They really trusted me . . . :p
BTW - I'm pretty new to your blog but I always love reading!

  3. we bought our teen daughter a bookmark that had this on it. never had her memorize it though. interesting! when she was headed out the door we would sometimes say something like 'remember that we will most likely find out about everything that you do--make sure it is stuff you want to talk about/have been a part of!'

  4. I think it is great, but I haven't heard it before--at least not all together. I have heard a few of the lines before.

  5. wow - this takes me back. My grandma bought me a ceramic trinket bowl that had this printed on the top. I used to love reading it as a teen (i know I am a dork). Makes me want to go digging in my basement for it...and wrap it up for my daughters birthday in 9 years LOL! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

That's a good one, I think I'll tell that one to my 14 year old and talk with him about what it means. I think he is at a time in his life where he needs to really chose his friends wisely. Kids that age can be swayed so easily.
