Sickness strikes the family!

My hubby was sick for like 4 days. He even had to miss this years Father/Daughter dance...no worries Papa stepped in and my daughter and her Papa Scot danced the night away! My hubby recovered and got up and went to work yesterday, then a few hours after he left I was hovering over the toilet bowl. Good times. It's weird though because he had a fever, stuffy nose, bad chest cough, and I had no fever....just the aches all over and threw up SEVERAL times all throughout the day. YUCK! So I woke up feeling better this morning. I haven't thrown up and the aches are mostly gone. HOWEVER....my son threw up this morning and is home sick from school. So the sickness lives on...UGH!

Since I spent all day yesterday in bed being MISERABLE I got quite a bit of tube time in. I was watching Rachel Ray and she had this girl on who published a book filled with women's stories about when they had their first period. This girl had such a horrible first experience and she wondered why so many women don't talk more about it. Lots of the stories are quite comical when you look back on them. So I thought I'd share mine...and maybe you would share yours!!! (that means you would have to comment!)

So, I had my first period when I was 11 years old. I was sitting with my mom with my bags packed for a long weekend of playing in a softball tournament. The tournament was a 6 hour drive away and another teammate was coming to pick us up and we were driving with them. Just before they got there I went to the bathroom and there it was. Honestly I don't remember if I called my mom in or not. I'm sure I did. So there I was wearing a pad for the very first time while riding in a car for SIX hours. Then I had to play softball all weekend while trying to get comfortable with this clunky thing in my pants. It wasn't much fun. But it's not the worse story I've every heard about a first time.

So...what about you? What's the story of your first period?

  1. Mine was the summer before 9th grade. I was 13. I was spending the night with a friend and we were supposed to go swimming the next day. I do remember swimming - but I don't remember what I did about the "problem" while in the pool. Funny how you forget some of the little details. I just remember feeling relieved in a way because I thought there was something wrong with me because I hadn't started yet and all my friends had.

  2. I thought I was sick. 13 and cramping like crazy. Finally my mom asked me if I thought it was my period. I said no because it was brown, not red. Now I know that it can start brown....didn't know that then.

Yours is bad! Oh the bulky pad (pre-days of the ultra thin) and softball....a six hour drive. Miserable!

So glad you're feeling better. Hopefully Colt is on the mend soon as well.

  3. Having four older sisters there was no need to call my mom in when i started. I already knew it all! i don't remember it being "Bad", except I was 14 and wondering when it would ever happen!

  4. I swear the pads were 5 inches thick!!!No one ever told me about tampons. It felt like sitting on a pillow. I was sure everyone knew. I just remember all my panties getting ruined. I hated every second! Every month.

  5. So sorry to hear about the sickies :(

wow. this is serious girl talk! lol! My mom NEVER talked to me about my period. I watched that movie in school about it, though, so I knew what it was. And, as it turned out, my mom was out of town, staying with her sister who was having a baby...and I certainly wasn't going to ask my dad to help me...sooo, I came up with a tape and toilet paper concoction. ew. so awful. definitely made sure I had the talk with my daughter and made sure she knew she could always ask questions!

  6. I honestly don't remember my exact first time just that my dad was threatening to publish it in the paper "when I became a woman"! I do remember one of the girls in my grade started in 7th grade French class and she was wearing white pants! The boys were so mean to her and teased her for weeks. She moved the next year. I am definitely going to talk to my daughter about it!

  7. I was in 7th or 8th grade. I was on my way home from school. Took a public bus home with one of my friends. And I was wearing white pants. Got off the bus and my friend noticed and absolute humiliation set in (how long was I bleeding?). It was a huge stain. I took side streets out of the norm home, used my friends jacket to try and cover my butt. We lived in a prime surf spot on the beach where there were tons of surfers and they were all out that day...."Hi!" I wanted to be in a bubble, completely hidden.

We just got over what you probably had.

  9. I started at home one morning. My mom was on the phone with my aunt, when I called her into the bathroom to tell her. She got back on the phone and said, "Judy, I am gonna have to call you back...Kimmie got her first period". She didn't just say it, she like high pitch, squealed it. We didn't have any pads at home, so I sat on the toilet while she ran to Albertsons. I spent the night at my friends, as planned, but I was never more uncomfortable. The bleeding on the white pants happened later....

  10. My mom and I don't have the kind of relationship were talk about things like that so I don't remember where I learn everything, but...I was at home after getting my tonsils out in 7th grade and I just took care of myself and moved on with my day. My mom didn't find out until a couple of months later when I had to have someone drive me to the store because I had used all the pads my mom had in the house.
