Bowling and Cupcakes

Well, I spent all day yesterday making nearly 70 cupcakes and 3 dozen cookies. I'm tired! But it was totally worth it! I made the cupcakes for Luke's birthday party. They had the party at this amazing bowling alley that we have in town, so the theme was ...BOWLING!

So what to do with cupcakes for a bowling theme? Head to the local flooring store of course! No, I'm serious. I went to the local flooring store, told them what I was doing and they gave me a pergo floor sample. Why? Because I needed a "bowling alley" to stage my cupcakes on. Next it was a phone call to my brother and sister in law with the sign company for a little help with sprucing up and personalizing the "bowling alley" I combined a few different pieces of clipart to create a personalized bowling graphic for Luke, they printed it up for me, and we adhered it to the "bowling alley".....I'll show you the results in just a minute!

So getting back to the actual cupcakes. I tried making "finger holes" but it looked really stupid. So I moved onto sugar cookie cutouts. But I didn't have a cookie cutter for that so I had to create one. Here is how I did it. First I found a clipart of a bowling pin. I sized it, printed it out, cut it out and traced it onto a plastic lid from a cottage cheese container. (any plastic lid will do). Then I cut the shape out of the lid and used it as a template for my cookies. ( I got the lid template idea from martha stewart living magazine)

It's a bit more time consuming than a cookie cutter, but you've got to work with what you've got sometimes. It worked pretty well actually. So I baked, and I frosted and then baked and frosted some more. And here is the final result.....

And the personalized "bowling alley" I mentioned earlier....

It was a fun time and it looked like Luke really enjoyed it!

Thanks again to all of you who have been praying for Luke. Please continue to pray. He will be returning to Doernbecher on Thursday for his next round of Chemo.

  3. Wonderful to see Luke and his family enjoying his birthday. As far as your creativity- amazing. I really taught you well, little sister. The only problem is that I taught you so well, that I now have no creativity left in me. You have completely drained me. What will this world be without all of my artsie fartsie ideas?

  4. Hey wait a minute mom and I want some credit for the artsie fartsie stuff that is now making both of you so famous. We would love all of you reading this to go to our blog to see what we mean but alas it is stuck in blogger creator block (very similar to writers block). The current problem is that mom can't type and I can't think, but once these minor problems are overcome we will be on our way. On a more serious note thanks again for thinking of Luke and for creating such a special birthday bowling alley cake. We are continuing to pray for Luke for his full recovery. Love Mom and Dad

  5. You're amazing, and yes I'm sure all the praise should go to your parents :-) Really though, if I deserve 100 commnents for copying the pattern of a little hat, you deserve 10,000 for your creativity.

Seriously though, what a blessing to Luke and his family for you to help them have a very memorable party.

  10. Wow. Came over here from Tip Junkie about the walking workstation, then saw your "cake decorating" category. What a great set of cupcakes for the bowling theme. And the floor and graphic -- so so cool! Can't wait to go read the rest of the cake posts right now.

  11. Shannon, we don't know each other but I will pray for your son. No child should have to go through such things. Remember.... by His stripes we are healed. And by the way, thanks for the bowling cupcake idea. My son's 11th b-day party is tomorrow at a bowling ally and I feel so bad that I don't even have a cake mix yet!! I can do it! :)

    Thanks and God bless you.
